Della J. Bassett

2LT Della J. Bassett was also one of the 17 nurses who was pictured in the 1942 “Wings Over America” yearbook. She was born June 4, 1921 in Brookneal, Virginia. She graduated from St. Philip Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 joining three other graduates of her alma mater. As all nurses in the ANC, she too arrived as a second lieutenant at the base and served as a surgical nurse. By March 15, 1946, she had been promoted to first lieutenant and was transferred. 1LT Elizabeth Dozier wrote in a nursing article newsletter for LAAB in 1947 that Bassett was one of five nurses who reported to Lockbourne on May 3, 1946. She also wrote that Bassett married CPT John Branche, AC, and left the military. She died in Sarasota, Florida on November 20, 2004 and her remains are buried at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Campbell County, Virginia..
